Held in conjunction with Women’s History Month
In honor of Women’s History Month Women in the Golf Industry will feature LPGA Tour legend Dr. Renee Powell in its WIGI-pedia educational webinar on March 27 at 4:30 pm (EDT).
The session, entitled Breaking Barriers: The Historical Perspective and Diversity of Women’s Golf, will be moderated by WIGI President Kay McMahon, an esteemed member of the LPGA Professionals Hall of Fame.
Women’s History Month presents an optimum opportunity to celebrate the tremendous impact women continue to have, and specifically in the golf industry.
WIGI President Kay McMahon shared, “I am thrilled and so looking forward to hosting Dr. Powell, a true pioneer in our industry, and one I highly respect. Our relationship through golf trails back to the summer of 1974 while playing in The Patty Berg Open, and I am sure we’ll reminisce a bit about it during our upcoming WIGI-pedia session.”
This WIGI-pedia online educational event will be both informational and inspirational as Dr. Renee Powell shares her experiences and provides insight into her trailblazing career. Dr. Powell was the second African American woman to compete on the LPGA tour and continues to be a role model for girls and women of all ethnicities.
Powell credits her parents William “Bill” and Marcella Powell, as her role models in challenging discrimination. She is the head golf professional at Clearview Golf Club (East Canton, Ohio), a club that was established in 1946 by her father. It is the first U.S. golf course designed, built, and owned by an African American.
As the first African American woman to earn PGA of America Class “A” membership status, Powell has also been inducted into the PGA of America Hall of Fame, a distinction previously earned by her father, making them the only father and daughter receiving the coveted award.
Powell is one of the first women recognized as an honorary member of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club (St. Andrews, Scotland).
Additionally, she is a recipient of the prestigious ASGCA Donald Ross Award, an inaugural recipient of the World Golf Hall of Fame Charlie Sifford Award, LPGA Ellen Griffin Rolex Award, PGA Tour Card Walker Award, USGA Ike Grainger Award, and the LPGA Pioneer Award.
