Brauer redesigned championship is the only golf course in Texas to go from unranked in the state to top 50

GLADEWATER, Texas – Just months after moving into the top 50 rated courses in Texas, Tempest Golf Club received another prestigious honor, being named the, “Best Outlying,” course in the North Texas region by Dallas-based Avid Golfer magazine in their annual November Best of Issue.

The Jeffrey Brauer-redesigned championship course has had quite of year of positive publicity. From being the only golf course in Texas to go from unranked in the state to top 50. Hosting a U.S. Amateur qualifier which attracted Tony Romo and other top Texas amateur players along with the elite Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational this fall.

“Located two hours east in Gladewater, Tempest Golf Club is a course that should be on your radar for a great one-day get together,” the largest golf magazine in Texas wrote in its yearly rankings.

“The course has some great rolling terrain including the scenic par 3 fourth hole. Earlier this year, they hosted a U.S. Amateur qualifier, so that should give you an indication of how nice the course is.”

Head golf professional Randy Wade, who has overseen the golf product at Tempest since before the Brauer redesign opened in 2018, said he was pleased, but not surprised by the latest course honor.

“We’re certainly gratified with the large amount of positive recognition we have received this year and the hard work by our team which it took to achieve it, but the best is still yet to come here,” said Wade. “We’re going to keep working and improving and getting better until we’re the best course in the state.”

Among the most recent improvements at the par 72 course is an improved and enlarged practice area with three new flags, along with two large putting greens adjacent to the large clubhouse plus continued ground improvement from superintendent, Stephen Killingsworth, who has overseen regrasssing some the areas on the course along with tree and brush removable.

“I’m very proud what we’ve been able to do here, but we are always looking to improve,” Killingsworth said.

In addition, Tempest has added management for a series of two-story condos behind the ninthth tee box as part of their expanded stay and play packages which includes dining in Neptune’s Grille and Bar on site.

East Texas golf legend Roy Pace, who started the First Tee of the Piney Woods, gives lessons here as does Pace. Longview’s Jacky Cupit, a four-time PGA Tour Champion and member of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame, also stops by Tempest at times to give some golf pointers.
